Vivian earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in French from Middlebury College in Vermont, and studied international relations at the School of International Service, American University, in Washington, D.C. Before opening Vivian Auslander Communications in 1986, she worked in journalism, corporate communications, and public information.

A member of IABC (the International Association of Business Communicators), Vivian has served on regional and Blue Ribbon judging panels for IABC's International Gold Quill Awards Competition and on the International Review Team for manuscripts. For the San Francisco Public Relations Round Table, an organization of senior-level PR practitioners, she has served as an officer and a board member. She is a board member of Active Arts Theatre for Young Audiences, an Oakland-based professional theatre company dedicated to bringing the joy and excitement of live theatre to Bay Area children and their families.
